Middle School Parent and Family Guide to some Quick Facts
 

  • Attendance: We want your child at school everyday, on time, and stay all day! 
    • Please have your child at school by 8:00 each day. 
    • School ends at 3:05 to begin dismissal for car riders and bus riders. If your child needs to walk home, please complete the WALKER form at the school. 
  • Safety: We want to keep your child, the staff, and visitors safe at all times. 
    • About 50+ video cameras are around the school recording at all times. 
    • A full-time Student Resource Officer from Gainesville City PD on staff and full time security guard on campus 
    • We require ID of those checking out students from school. The person checking out must be included on the child's Infinite Campus. If you need to change those on your child’s account, use the APP or come to school for us to help. 
  • Clubs and Extracurricular: Many opportunities are offered for your child to get involved. 
    • We have CLUB DAY! New this year your child will have opportunity to participate in clubs each month during the day! You
    • Additional clubs meet afterschool and vary in school, service, learning, competition, field trips, and adventures. Information on how to join and when meetings/activities are held afterschool is shared on school announcements.
    • Sports are offered year round for students. All students trying out or participating are required to have an updated physical and a parent created and complete DragonFly account. Visit the school website Athletic page for forms and more information. 
  • Supports at School: We have a wonderful staff ready to help you and your child be successful at school. 
    • Students have 6 teachers that teach your child daily. Reach out by email (a full list of names and emails are listed on the school website) to communicate questions, seek clarity, or share information with your child’s teacher. 
    • School counselor, graduation coach, mental health clinician, MTSS coordinator, behavior specialist, social worker and parent coordinator all work as a Student Support Team at our school to serve your child. 
  • Dress Code: We follow the district dress code for all students to eliminate distractions during the instructional day. 
    • Students should not expose their chest, butts, or bellies while at school.  (Pants should be worn at the waist.
    • Shorts and skirts should be fingertip length when standing. 
    • Students should remove hats or hoods inside the building. 
  • Bookbags and Chromebooks: We ask that all students bring a bookbag to and from school each day to carry their Chromebook, charger, and school supplies. 
    • Students will carry their own bookbag to each class as they transition throughout the day. Each class has a designated location for student bookbags. All students, with parent signature, will receive a Chromebook and charger checked out to the students. Chromebooks are for school assignments and activities. 
    • Students should take the Chromebook home & fully charge each night and bring it to school the next day. 
    • Safety software and monitoring filters are in place on the device, even when away from school for your child’s protection. Insurance is available to purchase to cover any damages to the Chromebook along with a loaner computer while the device is being repaired. 
    • Lunchboxes and purses should be stored with the bookbag in each class to limit instructional distractions. 
  • Cell Phones, earbuds, Smartwatches: These are allowed at school, but must be placed in bookbag for the school day. 
    • Students will be asked when they enter the building that cell phones are turned off and placed in bookbag, along with any wireless headphones. Students should not use cell phones during the school day. Students are encouraged not to bring a smartwatch as it is an instructional distraction. The front office is available if parents need to contact students during the school day. 
  • Selling items: Students are not allowed to sell items at school 
    • Any school approved fundraiser may be sold to staff at school, but no items may be brought into school and sold to another student during school
  • Food at school: Students have many opportunities for food at school. 
    • Breakfast and lunch are available at no cost to students each day. No outside fast-food should be brought to school or delivered to students at school. Students must finish outside breakfast before entering school each morning. 
    • Ice cream (following the nutritional guidelines) is sold at lunch each day for $1. A drink machine with water and other non-sugar drinks is available in the café during lunch. Monthly opportunities are available to purchase Blue Pop from our Partner in Education for $2 each.
    • Water bottles need to have a lid on the top with no squirt option as this is middle school.  
  • Items to leave at home: As a reminder, these items should be left at home and not brought to school.
    • Vapes of any type are illegal for students to have at any time; Toy guns, airsoft, or any type of item that has projectile items or looks like a gun; Lighter, firecrackers, fireworks, matches or any flammable items; Video games, console, or remotes; Knifes, flip trainers, laser pointers; other items not needed for instructional purposes

1st Offense

Tobacco education course is mandatory to be completed in an alternate academic setting, parent notification.

Up to 10 days suspension (in/out or combination). Parent and SRO notified. School will provide awareness of health risks monthly. Incident Contract created.

2nd Offense

Tobacco education course is optional; parent conference and up to 3 days of in school suspension with an incident contract. Up to 10 days out of school suspension pending tribunal. SRO notified. 

Up to 10 days out of school suspension pending tribunal. SRO notified.

3rd Offense

Three-day OSS suspension; parent conference with monitoring and revision of incident contract. For repeated violations beyond the 3 rd Offense, up to 10 days out of school suspension pending tribunal.

Up to 10 days out of school suspension pending tribunal for future recommendation. SRO Notified.

 

  • Parent Portal: Parent access to grades, attendance and school announcements. 
    • At least 1 family member should have access to the Parent Portal for each student. The parent coordinator can assist you in getting your account set up or any issues you have with your account. Set up your account for reminders and updates automatically for grades and attendance. 
  • CANVAS PARENT: Parent access to learning management system for each course

With the Canvas Parent app, parents can:
-View the list of courses where their students are enrolled. For each course, parents can see syllabus, assignments (title, due date, and instructions) and events
-Set alerts to view course announcements and/or receive reminders for a specific assignment or event (sent to mobile devices as push notifications).
-Monitor their child’s performance on Canvas assignments (final grade reported in Infinite Campus).
-Please Note: If a student does not have any visible courses you will see a “No Enrollments” message, this means the teacher has not made the course publicly viewable yet.
